Daily Routine

Lately I find myself falling into a similar routine: wake-up, hit the snooze until 9 or 10 a.m. (unless I have a work-out date with a friend), grudgingly get out of bed, contemplate eating a bowl of cereal and opting for waiting until lunch time to eat. I usually bum around the computer for an hour or so and then cringe at the prospect of having to plan my day’s study schedule.

Yesterday I was in super-ADD mode and was unable to study continuously for more than 1 hour at a time. I think I’m getting to that point where my brain gets rebellious when I have to review the same information for the 100th time. My brain basically says, “Are you kidding me? Again? Really? No, I think you should watch some brainless show online instead.”

And thus I spent many minutes yesterday figuring out how to watch the only episodes of “Dawson’s Creek” that featured the character Gretchen, played by, who else, Sasha Alexander. Her screen presence is captivating, no matter what role she is in, and the more romantic the role the better. I think she must have only been in 4 episodes in that *sappy, teen-angsty, 90’s show but I intend to figure out which ones and watch them all.

Oh sappy teen dramas with pretentious writing.

*I can’t believe I actually watched more than 10 mins. of a show that I made fun of so often in high school. I guess medical school and maturity make you cling to your formative years?

After attempting to study at the “Barn” last night I returned around 9 p.m. to unwind before going to bed. While watching some sappy, but professionally edited Youtube video about my favorite NCIS characters I came upon a song whose artist I have been trying to remember for months now. Oh yea, “Death Cab for Cutie”. This lead to an excursion on “Grooveshark” and to my new favorite song “Into the Dark”. A melancholy, touching song about one lover promising to meet the other lover in the after life. At least that is my interpretation. It’s actually quite depressing but the band always has a way of making any subject seem sweet and hopeful. The music inspired the creative part of my brain (which I was happy to find out has not in fact, atrophied). I did some sketching and got in touch with my artistic muse once again.

Good books, good show

Tess Gerritsen is an amazing author who has published many books in the catetory of homocide mystery. After a recent email exchange with the author I learned that she was once an internal medicine doctor but left the field of medicine to pursue writing full-time. Rock on Tess! Her books have inspired me to take more interest in my pathology lectures and maybe also my anatomy labs. Although I suspect formaldehyde is worse than the stench that Medical Examiners have to put up with…but perhaps I’m wrong.

Gerritsen’s “Jane Rizzoli” series was picked up by TNT back in 2010 and will be coming back for Season 2 in July. I’m so excited! 🙂

I love reading novels based on movies or television series or vice-versa and it always makes me feel more connected to either set of characters. Although the writers of the show took artistic license in how the characters look and injected comedy and romance into the bone-chilling, gut-turning plots, the show is heartily enjoyable for a fan of the books.

As much as I love the books I have to admit that I watch the show primarily for the main characters, Detective Jane Rizzoli (Angie Harmon) and Dr. Maura Isles (Sasha Alexander). Okay, maybe more for Sasha Alexander. I mean, come on, just look at that smile she has on her face while admitting to her passion for science. Sexy.

She also goes on to diagnose her date as having Marfan’s Syndrome (an inherited connective tissue disorder that can have devastating neurological and cardiovascular outcomes). The doc may be a classified genius but she’s not so adept at social protocol.

"I like science."

Nada Valgo Sin Ti

Juanes

One of the most beautiful songs every written/sung, by Juanes about love:

“Nada Valgo Sin Ti”

I’m definately too proud to watch or admit to enjoying “chick flicks” but there are some things that make me feel that super-feminine, mushy streak. Who would have thought it was possible?

1. “Nada Valgo Sin Ti” –Juanes

2. “Happy” –Brandi Carlile (about a lost love? that’s how I interpret it…and it definately pulls on those heart strings and makes you wonder about “the one that got away”)

Brandi Carlile--one of the most amazing vocal ranges of any female singer

3. Most Brandi Carlile songs actually…her voice plus her sweet, perceptive lyrics are very beautiful.

*I guess it helps that I have seen both in concert…oh Austin, how I miss you.

4. NPR: particularly any remotely sad story about a destitute people or particularly about children…I always well up with tears in the car and hope the driver next to me isn’t looking my way.

My First Car Crush and the Inspiration for My URL

Why I’m starting this blog:

  • As an alternative to a medical school blog already in existence
  • An outlet to express my social views and opinions about the world freely!
  • Stress outlet from the daily grind of medical school

Location:

  • I currently live in the Eastern Caribbean on an island that is so remote that packages sent to me have been re-routed to other countries. Thanks USPS.

What else? Ah, yes. I am a Medical Student in my First Year (fun times). It’s challenging but so amazing at the same time. I can’t believe I get to learn such interesting things on a daily basis. As of now I can tell the name of the muscle and what nerve innervates that muscle from your neck down to your toe (by-passing organs other than heart and lungs of course becaue that comes next semester!)

But enough with the nerding-out…for now. Let’s get to why I really wanted to start this blog!
